How to Remove Stains from Marine Vinyl Flooring
GatorBack Marine woven vinyl resists most stains naturally, but boats are messy places. Fish blood, sunscreen, fuel, food, and other substances all end up on the deck eventually. Here is how to handle each type of stain effectively.
General Stain Removal Rules
- Act fast: fresh stains are always easier than dried ones
- Blot, do not scrub, for liquid spills
- Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading
- Rinse thoroughly after any cleaning agent
- Never use bleach or acetone
Fish Blood
Cold water is key for blood. Hot water sets blood protein into the vinyl. Rinse immediately with cold fresh water and scrub with a soft brush. For dried blood, soak with cold water for 15 minutes then scrub. A small amount of hydrogen peroxide (3%) can help on stubborn dried blood, but rinse immediately.
Sunscreen and Lotion
Sunscreen is notoriously difficult to remove from vinyl. Spray with a degreasing cleaner or apply a small amount of dish soap directly to the stain. Let it sit 5 minutes then scrub with a medium brush and rinse. May require multiple treatments for heavy buildup.
Fuel and Oil
Apply a small amount of mineral spirits to a clean cloth and blot the stain. Do not pour directly on the vinyl. Follow with soap and water. Dry immediately after cleaning. For large spills, contact your marina for appropriate disposal procedures.
Food and Beverages
Most food stains clean up easily with soap and water. For sticky sugary spills like soda or juice, hot soapy water cuts through the residue. For mustard, ketchup, or other pigmented foods, treat quickly before they dry and set.
Mold and Mildew Spots
If your boat was stored wet and mildew has developed on the vinyl surface, mix one part white vinegar with one part water. Apply, let dwell 10 minutes, scrub, and rinse. Vinegar kills surface mold without damaging the vinyl. For persistent mold, a marine mildew remover rated safe for vinyl surfaces is appropriate.
Scuff Marks
Rubber-soled shoes and equipment leave black scuff marks. A rubber eraser or a specialized vinyl scuff remover handles these well. For very stubborn marks, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth works, but avoid extended contact with the vinyl surface.
