Made for Marine: How GatorBack Tests Its Flooring

Anyone can claim their product is marine grade. GatorBack proves it through a comprehensive testing program designed to simulate years of real-world marine use in controlled laboratory conditions. Here is a look at what goes into earning the GatorBack name on every roll of flooring.

UV Weathering Testing

UV radiation is the primary aging factor for marine flooring. We subject our products to accelerated UV weathering tests using Xenon arc lamps that simulate years of sunlight exposure in a matter of weeks. Our target: 2000 hours of accelerated weathering with less than 5% color change. Budget products typically fail at 500-800 hours.

Salt Spray Testing

For saltwater applications, we run extended salt spray chamber tests to verify that our backing adhesion, seam integrity, and wear layer remain intact under continuous saltwater exposure. This mirrors the conditions on an offshore boat stored in a saltwater marina.

Abrasion Resistance Testing

We use the Taber abrasion test method to quantify wear resistance. Our products must maintain surface integrity through thousands of test cycles before we consider the wear layer thickness adequate for marine use. This directly translates to how well your flooring holds up under tackle boxes, coolers, and years of foot traffic.

Temperature Cycling

Marine flooring experiences extreme temperature swings, from freezing winter storage to baking summer sun. Our thermal cycling tests run products through repeated freeze-thaw cycles to verify dimensional stability and adhesion integrity. Flooring that bubbles or lifts after winter storage has failed this critical test.

Chemical Resistance

We expose flooring samples to marine chemicals including fuel, oil, marine cleaning products, sunscreen, and fish cleaning solvents. Our formulations must show no significant degradation after realistic exposure durations.

Real-World Field Testing

Lab testing tells us a product meets standards. Field testing tells us how it performs in actual conditions. GatorBack products go onto real boats in real environments before any product reaches the market. Feedback from field testers shapes our final formulations.

The result of all this testing is flooring you can trust to perform for years. Shop GatorBack Marine Flooring
